Through The Garden Gate : February

Time to join with Sarah for another Through The Garden Gate.

February is waning fast. After last month's disaster with photos I made the most of the sunshine today to grab a few garden images. It's curious how I'm itching for more colour in the garden. Pre retirement I probably noticed very little in the garden during the winter months. By the time I finished work it was dark. My only venturing was at the weekend. Now I'm aware that more winter colour is needed. My present of hellebores is doing an excellent job as is a recently purchased daphne odorata . Before next winter I need to explore other possibilities.

Spring flowers are slowly emerging. Daffodils and crocus. Tulip leaves are pushing through and taunting me with their future promise. Iris too are slowly emerging. Sadly everything is still very winter bare, although there is beauty to be found on the swelling magnolia buds.

The bay tree had a hefty prune to allow more light into the lower garden. Thank goodness for the pink bench. It contrasts beautifully with the muted palette in this area.  Looking carefully, hyacinth are just beginning to colour and polyanthus are beginning to bloom.

A new eucalyptus plant has settled in nicely. I'm hoping to use its leaves in flower arrangements.

At the top of the garden the Apple tree is standing tall and hopefully will blossom this year. More sun should get to it thanks to lots of pruning.

Everywhere buds are pushing through.

My next job will be seed sewing, hopefully starting in the next week. Tomatoes, courgettes, hollyhocks and sweet peas first.

How is you garden fairing. Any good plant recommendations for this time of year?
