City Daily Photo Theme Day: Squares

The first of each month is a theme day for members of City Daily Photo. For the first of May, the theme is Squares, and you can find other examples right at this link.

I chose this space outside the Heritage Building at the City Hall property. The Human Rights Monument stands here, and I have shown it to you before. Ottawa City Council has recently designated this area as Nelson Mandela Square. It is a fitting tribute to a man who held human rights so dear to his heart.

One of the plaques on the site concerns itself with the Declaration of Human Rights. It was unveiled by President Mandela in 1998 during a visit here.

The monument itself is abstract in its look; I find some of the details more interesting than the work as a whole. Over seventy stone panels can be found inside, with the words equality, dignity, and rights inscribed in the languages of the First Nations people in Canada.

I'll have some more from this monument and the Square tomorrow.
